Recycling of Solid-State Batteries – Challenge and Opportunity for a Circular Economy?

Abstract The tremendous efforts made in the research field of solid-state Li-ion batteries has led to considerable advancement this technology and first market-ready systems can be expected near future. community is currently investigating different electrolyte classes (e.g., oxides, sulfides, halides polymers) with a focus on further optimizing synthesis electrochemical performance. However, so far, development sustainable recycling strategies allowing for an efficient backflow critical elements contained these into economic cycle thus transition from linear circular economy lags behind.
In contribution, resource aspects respect chemical value crucial materials, which are used electrolytes being discussed. Furthermore, overview possible approaches relation their challenges opportunities by means pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy direct recycling/dissolution-based separation processes given. Based considerations reference previous research, it will shown that require individually adapted suitably designed economy, improvements investigations required.
